Web2App: The Consumer App Gold Rush for Performance Marketers
the biggest DTC opportunity of 2026?
“We are at an incredible inflection point in history where ANYBODY can build a product that can improve lives and make millions.”
Cal AI founder Zach Yadegari said that - months before selling his $50M ARR app, Cal ai, to MyFiness Pal.
At typical SaaS valuation multiples, there’s little doubt the price was easily in the 9 figure range.
If you’ve been paying attention, Consumer apps are having a moment.
Look at the Google Trends data for "consumer app." It went vertical in late 2025.

Founders, investors, marketers. Everyone's waking up to mobile apps as an opportunity.
And when people talk about what's working, most of the conversation starts with apps like Cal AI.

“We are at an incredible inflection point in history where ANYBODY can build a product that can improve lives and make millions.”
An 18-year-old kid. Vibe coding. A basic AI calorie-tracking app.
He scaled it to $50M in annual recurring revenue using systematic influencer campaigns and viral content. Teenage founder. TikTok virality. Nearly all App Store revenue and practically zero “traditional” paid traffic.
Then he sold it to MyFitnessPal — a multi-billion dollar company.

Read that again:
“We are at an incredible inflection point in history where ANYBODY can build a product that can improve lives and make millions.”
That playbook is legitimately remarkable. But it requires cracking an algorithm. Content that hits. Viral distribution you can't manufacture on demand.
There's another approach that doesn't rely on going viral at all. If you're a direct response advertiser, pay attention.
SCALE: Web2App vs. Top DTC
Think of a big DTC funnel. Hims comes to mind. One of the most celebrated DTC brands of the last decade. $2B/yr revenue. 19.5M visits in Q4 2025.
Now look at this: MyIQ had 110.8M visits in Q4. A Web2App IQ test quiz funnel doing 6x the traffic of Hims.

These aren't app store pages. They're web funnels. Paid traffic to insanely optimized Quiz Funnels. Mass-scale systematic creative testing. The same playbook that built DTC, applied to mobile apps.
You’ve no doubt seen the ads for other Web2App beasts like the MadMuscles funnel we covered inside the Funnel of the Week Members Area: (members go here)
And MyIQ’s numbers are even more impressive.
They scaled from nearly zero to $3–4M/month in about six months.

You don't scale like that unless the unit economics are working.
Two different games. Cal AI's viral approach can produce a legendary exit — but it requires cracking an algorithm. The Web2App paid acquisition approach requires different skills. Funnels. Creative testing. Media buying.
Skills you probably already have.
Why This Exists Now
Eight months ago, this wasn't possible.
April 30, 2025: Judge Gonzalez Rogers found Apple in civil contempt in Epic v. Apple. Apple had been charging 27% on external purchases and using "scare screens" to discourage users from leaving the app.

source: cnbc
May 1, 2025: Apple updated its guidelines. Developers could now direct U.S. users to web payments without Apple taking a cut.
The operators who understood what this meant moved fast.
Why Performance Marketers Should Care
The operators running these funnels aren't app developers who figured out marketing. They're direct response advertisers who realized mobile apps are the highest-margin offer type available.
Same skills you already have:
Media buying, creative testing, funnel optimization, CRO, offer structure.
Better economics: 3% payment processing vs 30% platform fees. Custom upsell/order bump flow for max AOV. Subscription revenue with high LTV. Full attribution and pixel data. No algorithm dependency. Iterate on web without app review delays.
Building the app is easy now. AI tools collapsed the cost and timeline. The constraint is distribution. And distribution is a solved problem if you know how to buy media and build funnels.
How Big Is This Getting?
Here's where it gets wild. Our friends at Consumer App Index have been tracking this space obsessively — and the numbers they're putting out are hard to believe until you see them yourself.
The Web2App quiz funnel apps they track just crossed 300M+ combined monthly visits.
That's +40% MoM growth — across 250+ funnels, with more added every week.

source: consumer app index
Some individual apps are doing 40M+ visits a month. This category is quietly becoming one of the fastest-growing in all of consumer tech. And most performance marketers still haven't noticed.
The Resource You Need to Understand This Space
Consumer App Index just shipped an Interactive Web2App Leaderboard — and it's the best map of this territory we've seen:
You can search any app or category, sort by traffic or growth trend, and filter across 250+ funnels. For each one they track:
Traffic trends
Full Quiz + Funnel Breakdowns
Ad spend & all live creatives
Paywall pricing & upsell flows
If you're a DTC or direct response operator evaluating whether Web2App is worth your attention, this leaderboard is the fastest way to answer that question. The data speaks for itself.
Go check out the free leaderboard at consumerappindex.com and see the opportunity for yourself.
At Funnel of the Week, we're going to be covering Web2App funnels regularly going forward.
The same funnel analysis you're used to — applied to this new category.
Because the mechanics are the same. Quiz → paywall → upsell → subscription. DTC operators will recognize every layer.
The landscape is new. The skills aren't.
Stay tuned.
